The Covenant of the Old Testament; is it still in Effect?
God made an everlasting covenant with Noah and with all living beings (cf. Gen 9:16). It will remain in force as long as the world lasts.
Genesis 9: 16-17
“And the bow shall be in the clouds, and I shall see it, and shall remember the everlasting covenant, that was made between God and every living soul of all flesh which is upon the earth. And God said to Noe: This shall be the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh upon the earth“.
My dear friends in Christ; I learned [actually relearned] something recently that I need to share with you. I have in the past taught; not so much a wrong position as an INCOMPLETE one. In doing so I may have violated that “One Infallible Rule” for right bible understanding. “One passage cannot void or invalidate another passage.”
It’s this passage from the RSV Catholic Bible:
Heb. 8: 13 In “speaking of a new covenant he treats the first as obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.” The passage is quoted with more verses included below.
I may have intimated that Christ New Covenant in His Blood; voids the Old Testament Covenant. IT DOES NOT! It supersedes it, and takes precedence over it; but does not invalidate it. It can’t both because the Old Testament is too grounded on the Ten Commandments; and because the Old Testament finds its fulfillment and Perfection through Christ in His New Covenant. I have taught this also; but simply was not as clear as I should; and must be.
This affirms how important a GOOD Catholic Bible translation is. I often use the DR Bible to check myself; but don’t use [print its passages] excessively because it is a bit more difficult to read. For those who would like to access the DRB here is the site:

Luke.22: 20 “And likewise the cup after supper, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is thenew covenant in my blood”

Heb.9: 5 “Therefore he is the mediator of anew covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred which redeems them from the transgressions under the first covenant“.
“The sacrifices of the law were far inferior to that of Christ.” From the DR Bible:
Heb. 9:1-15 The former indeed had also justifications of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. For there was a tabernacle made the first, wherein were the candlesticks, and the table, and the setting forth of loaves, which is called the holy. And after the second veil, the tabernacle, which is called the holy of holies: Having a golden censer, and the ark of the testament covered about on every part with gold, in which was a golden pot that had manna, and the rod of Aaron, that had blossomed, and the tables of the testament. And over it were the cherubims of glory overshadowing the propitiatory: of which it is not needful to speak now particularly. The covenant with Noah remains in force during the times of the Gentiles, until the universal proclamation of the Gospel. The Bible venerates several great figures among the Gentiles: Abel the just, the king-priest Melchisedek – a figure of Christ – and the upright “Noah, Daniel, and Job”. Scripture thus expresses the heights of sanctity that can be reached by those who live according to the covenant of Noah, waiting for Christ to “gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad”.
In the sacramental economy the Holy Spirit fulfills what was prefigured in the Old Covenant. Since Christ’s Church was “prepared in marvelous fashion in the history of the people of Israel and in the Old Covenant,” the Church’s liturgy has retained certain elements of the worship of the Old Covenant as integral and irreplaceable, adopting them as her own:
-notably, reading the Old Testament;
-praying the Psalms;
-above all, recalling the saving events and significant realities which have found their fulfillment in the mystery of Christ (promise and covenant, Exodus and Passover, kingdom and temple, exile and return).
The gift of the commandments and of the Law is part of the covenant God sealed with his own.
In Exodus, the revelation of the “ten words” is granted between the proposal of the covenant and its conclusion – after the people had committed themselves to “do” all that the Lord had said, and to “obey” it. The Decalogue is never handed on without first recalling the covenant (“The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.”).
All the Old Covenant prefigurations find their fulfillment in Christ Jesus
. He begins his public life after having himself baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan. After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
In the Old Covenant bread and wine were offered in sacrifice among the first fruits of the earth as a sign of grateful acknowledgment to the Creator. But they also received a new significance in the context of the Exodus: the unleavened bread that Israel eats every year at Passover commemorates the haste of the departure that liberated them from Egypt; the remembrance of the manna in the desert will always recall to Israel that it lives by the bread of the Word of God; their daily bread is the fruit of the promised land, the pledge of God’s faithfulness to his promises. The “cup of blessing” at the end of the Jewish Passover meal adds to the festive joy of wine an eschatological dimension: the messianic expectation of the rebuilding of Jerusalem. When Jesus instituted the Eucharist, he gave a new and definitive meaning to the blessing of the bread and the cup.”
